History
The Met’s 2017 Rei Kawakubo exhibition showed how rearranged pattern pieces and displaced volume can change the outline of clothing. Yohji Yamamoto and Issey Miyake offer other distinct approaches to shape and cloth. This outfit combines an asymmetric Yohji shirt with Miyake’s COLLAPSING SCULPTURE skirt, making the experiment visible in the clothes’ edges and folds.
What defines the look
Let the skirt establish the outline. Its firm folded planes sit away from the upper hips, then narrow into a long overlapping lower shape. A broad diagonal flap interrupts the waist; longer folds continue the movement toward the hem. Keep the overlap mostly closed in an ordinary standing pose and set the hem high enough for the flats to show. The shirt introduces a smaller irregularity above it. Broad short sleeves and a pointed collar surround a dark charcoal panel that curves into the button opening. A light front tuck exposes the skirt’s upper fold while preserving the loose upper body. Separate the two black fabrics through their surfaces: smoother shirting against a more tactile skirt. The tote repeats the idea at a smaller scale, with triangular panels that shift as the bag hangs. Carry it low beside the leg, leaving the central skirt shape visible. Plain split-toe flats keep the feet compact. Long straight black hair, tucked partly behind the ears, and a narrow lifted charcoal eye line bring a clean edge to the face. A simpler variation can use one strongly folded skirt with a plain knit. Keep the volume concentrated in that garment and give its unusual edges room.
Hair & styling details
Wear long straight black hair with a clean center part and tapered front sections. Tuck one or both sides behind the ears to expose the collar.
Draw a narrow charcoal upper-lash line with a small lifted outer angle. Soft brows, fresh skin and a gentle rose lip balance the sharp fabric edges.
