Lesotho and South Africa · Proposed label · 2017 documented designer modernization
Basotho Blanket Outerwear
Basotho Blanket Outerwear puts a shaped blanket cape or coat over a comparatively simple base. Thick cloth, broad motifs and a strong shoulder outline carry the look. Here, an ivory-and-black cape with red edging sits above an ecru tee, dark straight jeans and brown ankle boots.
Basotho Blanket Outerwear is a proposed label for this contemporary designer interpretation. It focuses on garments made from Basotho blankets, not every way a blanket is worn in Lesotho or a replacement for its cultural and ceremonial meanings.
Background
Design Indaba profiled Thabo Makhetha’s blanket coats and capes in January 2016. A January 2017 Sunday Times feature also documented younger designers turning blankets into clothing. These sources establish designer modernization during that period. The separately inspected Kobo Long Cape supplies the construction reference for this outfit.
What defines the look
The maker’s conversion of blanket cloth into a shaped shoulder garment matters as much as its pattern. An asymmetric fastening and flared hem create a cape rather than a knitted cardigan or an ordinary printed shawl. Choose the outer layer first, then reduce competing volume beneath it. The drawing simplifies the textile motifs and makes no claim about their symbolism or ceremonial appropriateness.
Hair & styling details
Short natural coils leave the neckline and shoulder shape clear in this portrait. Longer hair can be worn behind the shoulders for the same effect.
Soft natural makeup keeps the attention on the patterned cloth. Red lipstick is optional; the cape already supplies a small red accent.

Build your own look
Pieces to start with
- Shaped blanket cape
- Check that the neckline sits securely and the arm openings let you reach comfortably. The cloth needs enough body to hold its outline without pulling heavily at the throat.
- Plain cotton tee
- A quiet crew neck gives the cape a clear background. A smooth, comfortable fit is useful under thick cloth; tuck only if it helps the lower edge sit cleanly.
- Dark straight jeans
- Straight legs balance the broad shoulder line without adding another sweeping shape. Keep the wash restrained and choose a hem that leaves enough space around the boot opening.
- Low Chelsea boots
- Rounded toes and a stable low sole ground the cape. Check the elastic opening and sock thickness together, especially if the outfit is intended for longer walks.

Ways to put it together
Styling suggestions from Coreification.
- Illustrated outfit: patterned tailored cape + ecru tee + dark straight jeans + brown Chelsea boots. Keep the front slightly open so the simple base remains visible.
- Polished variation: a longer blanket coat + plain knit top + straight tailored trousers + low leather shoes. Let the coat supply the main colour and pattern.
- Practical adaptation: wear a shaped blanket cape over a familiar long-sleeve top and comfortable trousers. Check its weight, fastening and arm movement before adding a bag or scarf.
