British countrywear
Also written British country style
British countrywear brings together practical outerwear, textured knitwear, sturdy trousers and country footwear. This guide explores an everyday combination of waxed cotton, Shetland wool, corduroy and brogued boots.
The illustration is a contemporary outfit assembled from four separate product records. It represents one route through a broad clothing tradition, with specific makers and places credited.
History
Country clothing developed through different activities, and its garments do not share one invention date. Barbour's own history gives a useful example: Margaret Barbour designed the short Bedale for equestrian use in 1980, followed by the Beaufort for country pursuits in 1983. The company describes the Beaufort's later use in town as well. Tricker's likewise identifies the Stow as a country boot now worn across fields and cities. These records show practical designs gaining wider wardrobes over time. The illustrated pieces are current catalog references, not surviving examples from those earlier dates.
What defines the look
Texture carries this outfit. The waxed jacket has a dark, creased surface; the sweater adds marled wool; wide corduroy ribs and brogue perforations supply smaller details. Each has its own provenance: the selected knit is made in Shetland, while Cordings lists Portugal as the trouser's country of manufacture. British countrywear describes a dress vocabulary, so manufacturing origin still needs to be checked item by item. A sweater and ordinary full-length trousers make an approachable everyday starting point.
Hair & styling details
Loose hair or a simple tie-back works with the broad jacket collar.
The outfit has no required grooming or makeup look; choose what feels comfortable for your day.
An illustrated outfit study
One way to put the pieces together
Four separate contemporary pieces meet through olive, oatmeal and tan, with visible changes from waxed cloth to wool, corduroy and leather. The illustration interprets visible details; it cannot establish hidden construction.

Build your own look
Pieces to start with
- Waxed field jacket
- Try it over your intended knit. Reach forward and sit down to check that the shoulders and hem allow comfortable movement.
- Plain wool crewneck
- A simple marled knit keeps the layers easy to combine. Leave enough room at the neck and sleeves under the jacket.
- Corduroy trousers
- A straight leg balances substantial boots. Check the rise and seated fit before arranging any permanent hemming.
- Brogue ankle boots
- Try them with the socks you will actually wear. Let the trouser hem meet the boot without bunching heavily.

Ways to put it together
Styling suggestions from Coreification.
- Illustrated outfit: olive Classic Beaufort + oatmeal Shetland crewneck + tan Cordings cords + acorn Stow boots. Wear the jacket open to show the change in texture.
- For a lighter layer: waxed jacket + plain cotton shirt + straight cords + country boots. Keep the shirt color quiet so the cloth textures stay clear.
- For a casual indoor version: oatmeal knit + the same cords and boots. Fold or shorten an overlong hem so the footwear remains visible.
