Everyday dressing · Contemporary interpretation
Classic style
Classic style builds an outfit around familiar shapes, balanced proportions and pieces that work across several settings. Here, a shirt, straight jeans, trench and penny loafers form an everyday city wardrobe.
This is Coreification's contemporary interpretation of a broad wardrobe approach. The linked pieces are current catalogue examples reviewed in October 2026; the outfit is an original pairing.
Background
The pieces bring different histories together. The V&A traces the trench from practical and military outerwear into fashion, including a womenswear catalogue from about 1937–44. Levi Strauss & Co.'s historian dates Lady Levi's to 1934 and the women's 501 to 1981. Those are separate product histories. They help explain how once practical clothes can become familiar wardrobe references without giving 'classic style' one founder or fixed starting date.
What defines the look
Our version uses a small palette and an ordinary straight silhouette. Classic dressing can include visible heritage details, colour and texture. An Ivy guide puts more emphasis on collegiate references, while a minimalism guide may make reduced ornament its main subject. The brands below identify the drawing references; fit and useful combinations matter more than owning those labels.
Hair & styling details
A simple side part or loosely tied longer hair keeps the collar visible. Choose the finish you find comfortable.
Our sketch uses natural makeup and an easy stance. These are choices for this particular illustration.
An illustrated outfit study
One way to put the pieces together
Four separately documented pieces form a relaxed city outfit: honey outerwear frames white linen and dark denim, with low black loafers. The illustration interprets visible details; it cannot establish hidden construction.

Build your own look
Pieces to start with
- Trench coat
- Try it over your thickest planned layer. The collar should sit comfortably and the sleeves should let you bend your arms. Worn open, its long vertical edges frame the shirt.
- Relaxed collared shirt
- Leave enough chest room for the button placket to lie flat. A soft tuck defines the waist while keeping some ease. Check pale linen in daylight for coverage.
- Straight jeans
- Look for a continuous line from knee to hem. Try sitting before choosing the waist size, then set the length with your usual shoes.
- Penny loafers
- A low sole keeps this outfit light. Check heel hold and toe room while walking; leather softness alone does not guarantee a useful fit.

Ways to put it together
Styling suggestions from Coreification.
- Illustrated city outfit: open honey trench + tucked white linen shirt + dark straight jeans + black penny loafers. The coat gives the relaxed base a clear outline.
- For a presentation: navy blazer + fine cream knit + grey trousers + low leather loafers. Keep the knit thin enough to sit comfortably beneath the jacket.
- For an easy weekend: striped tee + straight ecru jeans + canvas trainers. Add a light cardigan when needed; let the stripe carry the pattern.

- V&A — The Burberry Trench: Crafting an Icon
The trench's transition from practical and military outerwear into fashion; the display includes a circa 1937–44 womenswear catalogue. An exhibition overview supports the garment's broad history, not a universal definition of classic style.
- Levi Strauss & Co. historian — Celebrating 40 Years of the Women's 501 Jean
Distinguishes the 1934 Lady Levi's line from the women's 501 introduced in 1981. A company historian's account of this brand, not independent evidence of every denim tradition.
