Nightlife as self-invention

Club Kid

Also written Club-kid style

Club Kid dressing builds a character through clothing, hair and makeup. A sculptural wig, oversized headpiece or altered silhouette becomes the organising idea; fitted foundations, costume pieces and imposing shoes help the whole figure read as a deliberate transformation.

An established nightlife term used here for creative, character-led dressing and its contemporary interpretations. Queer club culture includes many looks beyond this theatrical branch, and no single costume is a membership uniform.

The New York Club Kids are documented in Walt Cassidy's 2019 retrospective interview about the 1990s scene. Dazed's September 2024 London festival photographs show a current setting for similarly theatrical self-styling, including tall wigs, corsetry and platforms.

Begin with one visual idea and build around it: monochrome baroque hair, a strange silhouette or a repeated handmade shape. Mixing costume and everyday pieces gives the outfit personality. Plan how the clothing moves, how you will carry essentials and whether the headpiece remains secure.

Hair & styling details

Hair: consider the wig as part of the garment silhouette. Test its balance and secure it before leaving; your natural hair texture can also be shaped into the focal form.

Makeup: draw one clear graphic idea, such as extended eyeliner, a sharply shaped brow or a defined dark lip. Cosmetic colour can connect separate costume pieces.

An illustrated outfit study

One way to put the pieces together

Original fully clothed character assembled from an inspected white curled wig, black unitard, short black cincher, satin gloves and platform boots. The theatrical hair and makeup direction connects the contemporary event references without copying a wearer. The illustration interprets visible details; it cannot establish hidden construction.

Pieces to start with

Statement hair or headpiece
Use a towering wig, sculptural hat or constructed shape to change the outline above the shoulders. Keep its attachment comfortable and its weight balanced.
Simple body foundation
An opaque unitard creates a continuous surface beneath added pieces. A fitted top and trousers offer easier changes without losing the clean base.
Constructed waist or shoulder layer
A short corset, rigid belt or shaped shoulder piece gives the costume a focal line. Leave room to breathe, sit and move freely.
Strong footwear and hand detail
Platforms can echo the headpiece's scale; a lower stable sole works too. Long gloves extend a colour or texture across the arms without requiring extra jewellery.

Ways to put it together

Styling suggestions from Coreification.

  1. Monochrome character: combine a black unitard, short cotton cincher, satin gloves, black platforms and a high white curled wig. Keep the face graphic and the colour story concise.
  2. Colour-built character: repeat one saturated colour through a loose tailored suit, painted hat and shoes, then change the proportions with an exaggerated collar or detachable sleeve piece.
  3. Practical club adaptation: wear a fitted black top with relaxed trousers, sturdy low boots and a compact sculptural headband. Keep one strong makeup shape as the link to the larger character.
