Double denim / Canadian tuxedo

Double denim makes denim the connecting material across the top and bottom of an outfit. A jacket or shirt meets jeans or a denim skirt, with matching washes creating continuity and contrasting washes making the separate shapes more visible.

The Canadian tuxedo is an established nickname for a denim-on-denim combination. This guide covers the coordinated outfit itself, rather than every workwear, Western or Americana look that happens to include jeans.

History

FashionUnited's October 2023 runway report tracked paired denim across autumn/winter 2023 and 2024 collections. Its examples included both familiar jackets with jeans and more tailored or skirt-based combinations, documenting another revival of an older styling idea.

What defines the look

Compare the two denims together in daylight before deciding whether to match them. They do not need to be identical: a paler jacket and medium-blue jeans can feel deliberate when their undertones are close. Let one piece be roomier if the other is compact. Similar seam colours, simple supporting layers and uncluttered shoes help the combination feel considered.

Hair & styling details

Hair: a tucked bob, loose natural texture or a low tie all suit the relaxed construction. A clean face-framing line keeps attention on the denim collar.

Makeup: softly defined brows and a natural lip work well with blue denim. A red or berry lip can add a single stronger accent without changing the outfit formula.

Denim upper layer
