These accounts establish a period of wider recognition; the garments and makeup techniques have older, overlapping histories.
What defines the look
The look draws recognizable elements from alternative wardrobes without making E-girl, Emo and Scene interchangeable. Dazed also records disagreement among interviewees about being called an e-girl. For styling, the useful connection is the complete combination: visible sleeve layering, a graphic silhouette and deliberately conspicuous beauty details. The illustration uses a moth tee, pleats and low-soled boots, with pink hair panels and cross-nose blush giving the dark clothes a bright focal point.
Hair & styling details
