Mongolia · A robe for daily movement

Everyday Deel

Everyday Deel centres a long Mongolian robe in an outfit built for ordinary movement. Its overlap, sleeve shape and waist fastening remain the organising features, while trousers and practical shoes support them. This interpretation combines a restrained checked robe with a broad leather belt and black boots.

Everyday Deel describes documented daily wearing, including renewed interest reported in 2024. It is not a proposed label or a single national uniform. The illustrated retail garment is one cut among different regional, seasonal and personal forms.

During a June 2024 visit, photographer Claire Thomas documented a Mongolian family wearing deels made by Bayarsaikhan. Her report distinguishes everyday cotton garments from more elaborate occasion wear and includes a participant’s account of increasing daily use. Family photographs also show trainers alongside traditional clothing.

Begin with the robe’s actual construction. The selected example has a broad diagonal overlapping collar and a gathered waist; other deels have a higher standing neckline and different fastenings. Ask a maker about the intended closure and fit rather than flattening those differences into one pattern. The outfit below combines separately documented products and does not reconstruct a particular family member’s clothes. Keep the hem usable for the activity, with enough room to sit and take a full stride.

Hair & styling details

Short dark hair with a soft side sweep keeps the collar visible. The fictional young Mongolian character is not a portrait of the source family or product model.

Natural brows and understated skin finish suit this interpretation. Hair and makeup are personal choices, not requirements for wearing a deel.

An illustrated outfit study

One way to put the pieces together

An original cooler-weather combination of a checked retail deel, separately selected burgundy leather belt, dark trousers and practical round-toe boots, informed by documented daily wearing. The illustration interprets visible details; it cannot establish hidden construction.

Pieces to start with

Everyday deel
Choose an appropriate fabric weight and follow the garment’s own overlap. Preserve room through the shoulders, sleeves and lower section instead of cinching the entire robe tightly.
Waist belt or sash
Secure the robe at a comfortable height, leaving a little ease above the belt. A broad leather belt adds structure; a soft cloth sash produces gentler folds.
Simple dark trousers
Use a comfortable layer beneath the robe. Much of it may be concealed, so prioritise freedom of movement and avoid bulky seams at the boot tops.
Practical boots or trainers
Check the robe length with the complete footwear. Lined boots suit this cooler-weather interpretation; low or high trainers offer a lighter documented pairing.

Ways to put it together

Styling suggestions from Coreification.

  1. Illustrated outfit: checked long deel + broad burgundy leather belt + black straight jeans underneath + round-toe lined boots.
  2. Lighter day: plain cotton deel + soft self-colour sash + comfortable trousers + high-top trainers, with the hem clear of the soles.
  3. Layered travel option: simple belted deel + short open jacket + straight trousers + lower boots. Check that jacket and robe sleeves move comfortably together.
