Noir evening polish with a clear red lip
Femme Fatale
Femme Fatale fashion draws on the dramatic eveningwear and carefully composed beauty of screen noir. A copper-red cowl dress supplies the color here. Black elbow-length gloves, pointed pumps and a small velvet clutch frame its fluid shape, while long dark waves and defined red lips give the portrait its focus.
A contemporary cinematic evening outfit assembled from four documented designs.
Background
Sam Wigley’s BFI account places films such as Double Indemnity, Gilda and Out of the Past within the classic Hollywood noir cycle. His discussion of Gilda specifically identifies its long black gloves. The archetype predates this particular outfit; the contemporary styling shown here borrows the visual language of draped evening clothes, gloves and polished beauty rather than recreating one film costume.
What defines the look
Keep the dress’s drape visible from shoulder to hem. Narrow straps and a shallow cowl work with long waves when most of the hair rests over one shoulder. Plain gloves extend the dark line through both arms; a velvet clutch adds a softer black surface beside smooth leather shoes. Carry the bag low so it does not interrupt the cowl. A dark upper lash line and a carefully drawn red lip supply the strongest facial details. Check the side slit while walking and sitting, and adjust the straps so the neckline falls naturally rather than pulling it tight.
Hair & styling details
Shape long hair into broad controlled S waves from a deep side part. Keep the front wave lifted off one eye and let the lower lengths fall together over one shoulder.
Use precise black upper liner with a softly smoky outer corner. A clear red lip with a defined cupid’s bow and softly warm cheeks brings the cinematic emphasis to a youthful face.

Build your own look
Pieces to start with
- Plain cowl midi dress
- Choose an opaque silk or satin surface with enough ease to drape. Check strap length, side-slit height and skirt movement together before deciding on the hem.
- Black silk jersey gloves
- Look for a plain full-finger glove with a smooth upper edge. Compare finger length and wrist-to-opening measurements; this selected design finishes just above the elbow.
- Pointed black pumps
- A simple closed pump keeps the silhouette clear. Check the actual heel height and toe space, then try it with the dress hem rather than judging it in isolation.
- Small black velvet clutch
- Use a compact case with one quiet top clasp. Remove a detachable chain for hand carrying, and check that the clasp clears the glove fabric.

Ways to put it together
Styling suggestions from Coreification.
- Illustrated outfit: copper-red cowl midi + black silk gloves + pointed black pumps + velvet clutch. Add long side-parted dark waves and a defined red lip.
- Lower-heel adaptation: dark red draped midi + low pointed pumps + small black clutch. Keep the polished waves and liner, and shorten the glove length or leave the hands bare for routine tasks.
