History

ABC interviewed young Chinese workers in May 2024 about relaxed office outfits and the effort expected of women’s appearance. March reporting by The World of Chinese described clashing layers, old wardrobe favourites and a wish to keep warm or save time and money.

What defines the look

Start with clothes already in your wardrobe. An oversized sweatshirt, an ordinary quilted jacket and soft trousers make a useful base; let their different colours and textures remain visible. A slightly longer sweatshirt under a shorter jacket creates the layered, unprecious outline without needing artificial damage. Keep hems clear of the ground and leave enough space at elbows and knees for a day of sitting and commuting. Choose shoes that suit the route: trainers for a long walk, or supportive slippers where they are practical. This approach can be quiet rather than theatrical. Repeating one comfortable item matters more than achieving an elaborate clash, and the clothes need no expensive designer story.

Hair & styling details

A simple ponytail, loose bob or quick clip keeps hair comfortable around a hood. Allow an ordinary finish rather than sculpting a deliberately dishevelled hairstyle.
