Plaid and denim · An eclectic mix

Hipster

Hipster style mixes indie references with familiar workwear and vintage casual clothing. This version combines a plaid shirt, narrow dark denim, a brown knit beanie and substantial cap-toe boots. The contrast between a loose upper layer and a slim leg gives the outfit its shape.

This guide follows the late-1990s-to-2010s indie and urban casual clothing associated with the label. Its contemporary outfit concentrates on plaid, denim, knitwear and leather.

The argument around n+1’s 2010 book What Was the Hipster? shows how disputed the term already was. In a contemporaneous Salon review, Christopher Byrd considers its late-twentieth-century revival while distinguishing earlier Black cultural meanings. Rather than assigning a founding year or a single creator, this guide treats the label as a changing cultural description.

The contemporary essays discuss the label through taste, consumption and urban social life. Its clothing image often brought vintage-looking shirts and workwear details into an indie wardrobe. Here, orange plaid supplies the main color above plain dark jeans; the beanie repeats the warm brown of the boots. Wear the shirt loosely enough for a clean vertical front and let a short cuff show the cap-toe shape. The narrow denim distinguishes this combination from the roomier silhouettes explored in Heritage Workwear.

Hair & styling details

Let a loose fringe or softly waved ends show beneath the beanie. Keep some space around the face so the hat does not conceal the shirt collar.

A lightly groomed face and soft brow definition suit the casual layers. If wearing facial hair, give its outline a tidy shape while keeping the overall finish relaxed.

Pieces to start with

Plaid wool shirt
Choose enough shoulder room to reach comfortably. Wear the straight hem untucked and use the shirt as the main pattern. Avoid adding a second competing check.
Slim dark jeans
Check knee and seat movement rather than chasing the smallest size. Dry denim can change with washing; read the particular maker’s care and shrinkage advice before altering the length.
Ribbed beanie
Turn the cuff to a comfortable depth and let the crown relax. Repeat one warm tone from the shirt for a simple link between the pieces.
Brown lace-up boots
Leave the cap toe and lacing visible below the jeans. Check boot fit with the socks you intend to wear. In the illustration any socks are fully covered by the boot shafts.

Ways to put it together

Styling suggestions from Coreification.

  1. Illustrated outfit: red, black and tan plaid shirt + dark slim jeans + ochre-brown beanie + brown cap-toe boots. Keep the shirt buttoned with no visible underlayer.
  2. An indoor variation: a plain tee under an open secondhand shirt + straight jeans + canvas shoes. Choose one patterned layer and leave the hat off.
  3. Easy wardrobe adaptation: combine a checked shirt with narrow jeans and low boots. Roll the sleeves below the elbow and make one small trouser cuff so the shirt, denim and shoe shapes stay distinct.
