Industrial — band print and charcoal utility
Industrial
Industrial styling brings band graphics, dark utility clothes and substantial boots into one direct outline. A charcoal work jacket frames a black Nine Inch Nails tee, straight cargos continue the dark line, and monochrome leather boots give it weight. Long black hair and close charcoal eye makeup soften the square garment shapes.
A contemporary music-connected outfit, using an official Nine Inch Nails tee with three separately selected utility pieces. It draws on one wearable direction within industrial’s varied visual history.
Background
Industrial music grew from experimental performance and electronics in the 1970s. In Danny Turner’s Tape Op interview, Chris Carter recalls building instruments and developing Throbbing Gristle’s sound with the other members as they worked. His account links the name to their industrious process, giving the clothing reference a more specific starting point than factory imagery alone.
What defines the look
In Dazed’s 2018 interview, Pharmakon distinguishes the interconnected music, imagery and performance of Throbbing Gristle from later musical directions including Nine Inch Nails. The same article documents her collaboration with designer Yang Li. Industrial’s fashion connections therefore extend across artist projects, performance and merchandise. Martin Atkins’s museum introduction includes shirts and other visual ephemera alongside recordings. Here the official band graphic makes the musical link explicit. A short charcoal jacket frames its pale rectangle; straight black cargos and all-black boots keep the rest structured. The jacket’s brass zip supplies one warm highlight. Leave the jacket open and the shirt untucked just below its hem. This compact layering gives the print space while keeping the cargo pockets visible.
Hair & styling details
Wear straight black hair around shoulder length with a slightly off-center part. Separate the front strands and tuck one side back to keep the eye makeup visible; leave the ends lightly textured.
Smudge charcoal pencil close to upper and lower lashes, softening the outer corner. Natural lips and gentle skin shading keep the eyes distinct without hard cheek contour.

Build your own look
Pieces to start with
- Short work jacket
- Choose a boxy body that ends around the hip, with enough room to leave the front open. A pointed collar and plain hem band give a crisp frame; keep the sleeve pocket clear of hair and added patches.
- Band graphic tee
- Center the pale print between the jacket edges. A regular crewneck and a hem only slightly longer than the jacket keep the torso balanced. The illustrated PHM-era design is a current official product, not a dated vintage example.
- Straight cargo trousers
- Use a regular straight leg with one flap pocket per thigh and plain knees. Let the hem meet the boot shaft without pooling over the toe; check the length while standing and sitting.
- Monochrome leather boots
- Black eyelets, laces, stitching and sole keep the boot continuous with the trousers. A rounded plain toe and moderate low heel supply weight without a tall platform. Lace evenly and leave the front vamp visible.

Ways to put it together
Styling suggestions from Coreification.
- Illustrated: open charcoal Eisenhower jacket + black Nine Inch Nails tee + straight black cargos + monochrome lace-up boots. Let the tee extend just below the jacket.
- Darker variation: black artist tee + black cotton overshirt + straight charcoal utility trousers + black boots. Keep the graphic as the lightest element.
