Japanese Ivy

Also written Japanese Ivy style

Japanese Ivy is Japan's continuing interpretation of American collegiate dress: button-down shirts, blazers, chinos and loafers, studied closely and adapted through Japanese clothing businesses and wearers.

This guide follows the VAN Jacket and Take Ivy connection into contemporary clothing. The illustrated outfit combines four separately documented products; its proportions and styling are Coreification's choices.

Kensuke Ishizu and VAN Jacket helped establish Ivy style in Japan. Kamakura Shirts' account links that story to Take Ivy, the photo book published by Fujingaho in 1965 after a team visited American Ivy League campuses. Clothing photographs made ordinary campus combinations available for close study across the Pacific. Kamakura founders Yoshio and Tamiko Sadasue had worked at VAN; their later shirt business carried forward that interest. This is a history of exchange through photographs, retail and garment design. The American references and the Japanese interpretation both belong in the description.

The useful distinction is attention to familiar pieces and their details. A rolling button-down collar, patch pockets and trouser turn-ups can matter as much as a color combination. BEAMS describes its selected blazer as a contemporary fit based on 1960s sports coats. Its roomy tapered chinos show how that vocabulary can be adjusted for present-day wear. This outfit uses Japanese brands alongside American G.H.BASS shoes. Brand nationality does not establish where each item was manufactured.

Hair & styling details

A simple center part or hair tucked behind the ears leaves the collar visible.

Grooming and makeup are personal styling choices, with no required Japanese Ivy beauty routine.

Pieces to start with

Navy blazer
Start with an easy shoulder and enough room for your shirt. Check the length with the actual trousers you plan to wear.
Oxford button-down shirt
Let the collar roll naturally. Tuck the shirt smoothly, then loosen the fabric slightly so you can move.
Pleated chinos
Keep room through the seat and thighs. Turn-ups give a clear stopping point above loafers; try the length while wearing them.
Penny loafers
Choose a plain leather pair with a secure heel fit. Burgundy adds warmth to blue and khaki without introducing another pattern.

Ways to put it together

Styling suggestions from Coreification.

  1. Illustrated outfit: navy BEAMS PLUS blazer + blue Kamakura Oxford + beige pleated BEAMS PLUS chinos + wine G.H.BASS loafers. An open neck and visible turn-ups keep the combination relaxed.
  2. For a lighter day: blue button-down + the same chinos and loafers. Leave the jacket at home and let the shirt collar and trouser shape do the work.
  3. For cooler weather: fine crewneck knit over the button-down + straight chinos + loafers. Keep the collar visible and choose one quiet knit color.
