A structured jacket and long folded skirt
Ming-Style Aoqun
Also written Ming-style jacket-and-skirt hanfu, 明制袄裙
Ming-Style Aoqun centres a structured jacket worn over a long skirt. Defined collars, orderly folds and patterned borders create a composed outline. This contemporary interpretation combines a purple square-collar ao with a coordinating mamian skirt, pale shoes and a single decorative hairpin.
Aoqun is an established jacket-and-skirt term. Here it refers specifically to modern Ming-inspired wearing, not an authenticated historical reconstruction. The 2024 period describes revival visibility, including television styling; the selected retail pieces illustrate a current version.
History
People’s Daily reported on contemporary traditional-dress designers in August 2024, specifically discussing Ming mamian skirts and period clothing on Henan television. Meng Tangji’s coordinating jacket and skirt supply the particular silhouette examined here through Nüwa Hanfu’s retail photographs.
What defines the look
The jacket falls over the skirt waistband, making the upper garment visibly independent. This differs from Tang-inspired chest-high skirts and from modern outfits that pair a mamian skirt with a sweater. Keep the skirt’s broad front area and side folds organised when tying it, then check that the layers stay closed during movement. Rich surface patterns need room: a single pin can be enough when the clothes already carry several motifs. The illustrated pieces are polyester, despite their lustre and the product’s poetic name. Their decorative designs should not be read as proof of historic rank, ritual use or exact dynasty-wide practice.
Hair & styling details
A neat dark bun with a few soft front strands balances the broad sleeves. Keep the ornament small enough that the collar remains the main frame for the face.
A restrained rose lip and fine eyeliner suit the polished outfit. These are present-day styling suggestions rather than reconstructed Ming cosmetics.

Build your own look
Pieces to start with
- Structured ao jacket
- Choose a clearly defined neckline and enough sleeve room for comfortable movement. Wear the jacket over the waistband so its hip-length shape stays visible.
- Long folded skirt
- Set the skirt at the waist and arrange the side pleats before fastening. Leave the broad front panel readable and the hem clear of the ground.
- Low decorative shoes
- A pale jacquard pair echoes the lighter garment motifs. Check the actual platform height and fit; the toe ornament should remain clear of the hem.
- One hair ornament
- Place a modest pin into a securely arranged bun. Repeat one pale colour from the outfit rather than adding a second large group of ornaments.

Ways to put it together
Styling suggestions from Coreification.
- Illustrated outfit: purple square-collar ao over a pale inner collar + coordinating brocade mamian skirt + cream cloud-head shoes + one blue-and-pearl-toned pin.
- Quieter palette: plain muted ao + dark mamian skirt with a narrow woven border + simple cloth shoes. Let the collar and skirt folds carry the look.
- Cooler occasion: a lined ao over a light base + coordinating long skirt + short outer cape and low shoes. Keep the cape clear of the jacket fastening.
