Patchwork dressing

Patchwork dressing makes joined fabric pieces the focus of an outfit. Contrasting triangles, squares or irregular sections can organize color and texture across a jacket, skirt or trousers. One clearly pieced garment is enough to begin.

Patchwork means sewing pieces together; quilting stitches layers together. They can appear in the same garment. This outfit uses a newly made quilt-inspired jacket. Its pieced appearance does not establish that it was cut from an old quilt or made from waste.

The V&A distinguishes these two techniques and documents their use in garments, household textiles and art. Patchwork belongs to multiple histories rather than one fashion founder. The International Quilt Museum’s 2025–26 exhibition considered both newly designed piecework and clothing repurposed from quilts. Bode’s Kaleidoscope Quilt Jacket provides a specific contemporary example: the maker describes a hand-quilted replica inspired by a quilt from the 1940s.

What defines the look
