Shamate

Shamate brings sculptural dyed hair together with narrow trousers, layered shirts and assertive jackets. The silhouette can be simple below the head: a short black jacket and slim jeans give an enormous fringe and lifted spikes room to become the focal point.
Shamate is an established Chinese subculture, not a proposed label. This guide draws on a surviving scene documented from 2017 and renewed attention around We Were Smart in 2019–2021; it does not claim a current nationwide revival.
History
The World of Chinese describes a youth community associated with rural migrants working in manufacturing towns. Li Yifan’s documentary, filmed from 2017, returned attention to participants’ own accounts. A 2019 director interview also shows the clothing and conspicuous hair in full-length photographs.
What defines the look
Treat the people behind the style as participants with their own histories. The documentary reporting connects appearance with friendship, recognition and self-expression amid demanding work. This outfit interpretation focuses on shape and styling without making poverty or ridicule into a costume. The selected modern products illustrate useful construction details; they are not claims about what a particular participant owned.
