India; Pakistan; diaspora · 2019 documented designer trend
Sharara Suit.
Sharara Suit builds its outline around two generously flared trouser legs, balanced by a kurta and dupatta. The movement belongs below the tunic: each leg opens broadly from the upper thigh. This pink-and-ivory outfit keeps the top simple so that the striped trousers remain legible.
An established South Asian garment combination, presented here through a light festive outfit. A sharara has continuously flared legs; a gharara usually introduces a fitted upper leg and a pronounced join or gathered flare around the knee.
History
Vogue India included shararas in its May 2019 guide to contemporary salwar variations. A September 2019 Times of India comparison also distinguished their construction from ghararas. These document recent designer interest, rather than the garments' historical beginning.
What defines the look
Sharara suits circulate across India, Pakistan and diaspora wardrobes, with different levels of ceremony, embroidery and ease. The specific pink trousers and separate plain kurti shown here are current commercial references, not a reconstruction of a 2019 runway outfit. Choose the flare and tunic length together: a very long top can conceal the shape that gives the combination its identity. The dupatta can add coverage without needing to wrap every layer tightly.
Hair & styling details
A loose, tidy braid keeps the collar and shoulder drape clear. The illustrated hair choice is optional and does not define the style.
Soft kohl and rose lips echo the outfit without adding another strong colour; a bare face works equally well.

Build your own look
Pieces to start with
- Short kurta
- A straight, mid-thigh kurta leaves the trouser flare visible. A simple collar and small buttons keep the upper body quiet beside metallic stripes.
- Sharara trousers
- Look for two distinct wide legs with uninterrupted flare from the upper leg. Walk and sit in them before setting a hem that clears the ground.
- Light dupatta
- A fine chiffon or cotton scarf adds a separate moving layer. A single shoulder drape exposes the kurta opening and prevents the outfit becoming visually crowded.
- Block-heel sandals
- An open sandal keeps the broad hems light. A stable block heel can lift the cloth clear of the floor; flat sandals also work with adjusted hems.

Ways to put it together
Styling suggestions from Coreification.
- Illustrated outfit: plain pink short kurta + pink striped sharara + ivory embroidered dupatta + gold block-heel sandals. Keep the two trouser legs visible.
- Evening variation: jewel-tone sharara + a shorter embellished kurta + a translucent matching dupatta + low metallic sandals. Concentrate shine in one area.
- Practical adaptation: pair a washable cotton sharara with a plain short kurta and flat sandals. Shorten the hems for walking and use a lightweight scarf.
