Wide sleeves, ceremonial layers
Song Court Revival
Song Court Revival brings long, straight-front layers, broad outer sleeves and an embroidered xiapei band into an elaborate Hanfu ensemble. A pleated skirt continues the vertical line, while arranged hair and small luminous details concentrate attention near the face.
Proposed label for contemporary Song-inspired formal styling. The 2024 period refers to televised revival imagery. The illustrated outfit uses a separately documented modern bridal design; it makes no claim to reproduce a historical court uniform.
Background
Yangtze Evening News reported Yang Mi’s Tang, Song and Ming-inspired sequence in the 2024 Henan Spring Festival Gala. Contemporary maker Chonghui Hantang’s Zijin ensemble supplies a concrete example of layered Song-style formal dressing, with an outer robe, straight-front inner layer, skirt and long xiapei.
What defines the look
Let the layers create the drama. Fit the under-bodice and skirt securely first, then arrange the narrower inner sleeves beneath the broad outer sleeves. The front edges should hang cleanly enough that each layer remains visible. A long decorated xiapei needs space: keep bags and extra necklaces away from its line, and check that its pendant does not catch the waist ties. Walk and sit in the complete outfit before an event, especially when the sleeves are very wide. Hem length should leave your chosen shoes usable. A smaller hair ornament can keep the look comfortable while preserving its formal balance. Treat colour and embroidery choices as parts of a modern design, with the maker’s actual construction guiding the assembly.
Hair & styling details
An arranged bun or coiled updo gives long layers a clear upper outline. Anchor a modest comb or hairpin securely and keep its weight comfortable.
A softly defined brow and red or rose lip work with the rich fabric. Pearl-like accents can stay small and concentrated rather than covering the face.
An illustrated outfit study
One way to put the pieces together
A contemporary Chonghui Hantang Zijin formal ensemble, assembled from separately inspected layers and xiapei, with independently documented cream shoes and simplified head ornaments. It is distinct from Yang Mi’s televised outfit. The illustration interprets visible details; it cannot establish hidden construction.

Build your own look
Pieces to start with
- Wide-sleeved outer robe
- Choose enough shoulder room for the inner layers. Let the sleeves fall freely and keep their cuffs clear of the hands when carrying anything.
- Straight-front inner layer
- Parallel front edges establish a long line beneath the robe. A narrow-sleeved version reduces bulk without losing the visible border.
- Long embroidered xiapei
- Arrange the band evenly over the shoulders and keep its low point centred. Leave the ornament visible against a relatively quiet layer beneath.
- Pleated skirt and low shoes
- Secure the waistband before adding the robes. Choose stable shoes and a hem that lets you take a normal step without lifting the skirt.
