An open vest and a light pleated line
Summer Song Separates
Summer Song Separates pairs a light open vest or beizi with a simple inner top and flowing skirt or trousers. A clear vertical opening, small-scale pleats and restrained decoration give the historical references an easy, airy everyday shape.
This is a proposed label for modern Song-inspired summer combinations. June 2024 reporting documents interest in lighter separates; it does not establish a fixed historical uniform or an origin date for the garments.
Background
A June 2024 Ebrun report described summer demand for lighter Song-inspired Hanfu, including vests and inner tops. The contemporary Yi’an set supplies a concrete example: a short open vest, floral camisole and pale-green pleated skirt.
What defines the look
Choose the layers for how they move together. An open front should reveal enough of the inner top to create a clear centre, while the skirt can fall freely below it. Keep the waist smooth so several thin fabrics do not gather into a bulky ridge. A short vest makes the skirt feel long; a longer beizi creates a continuous vertical line. When mixing pieces, repeat one quiet colour and vary the texture instead of adding ornate trim everywhere. Light-looking cloth is not necessarily cool or sun-protective, so check its composition and lining for the weather. For walking, shorten the hem enough to clear the shoe. The relaxed effect comes from comfortable movement as much as delicate fabric.
Hair & styling details
A compact high bun keeps the neckline clear. Leave a few soft strands around the temples if you prefer a less formal finish.
Warm rose lips and lightly defined brows complement the pale colours; keep the complexion finish comfortable in warm weather.

Build your own look
Pieces to start with
- Open vest or beizi
- Select an unobstructed front opening and a length that works with the skirt. Let the edges hang straight without pulling at the shoulders.
- Simple inner top
- A lined camisole or chest-wrap top provides a quiet centre. Secure the fit before adding the outer layer.
- Light skirt or trousers
- Use controlled pleats or loose straight legs. Avoid excessive waist bulk, and allow enough room for a normal walking stride.
- Low closed shoes
- A modest flat or platform supports a long hem. Try the shoes with the outfit before deciding its final length.
