History
Secondhand clothing has a long retail history. Oxfam records a temporary shop in 1943 and its first permanent shop in 1947. The Museum at FIT’s Fashion Unraveled exhibition also documented clothes changed through repair and reuse, including a 1966 Betsey Johnson jumpsuit made from rugby shirts. Thriftcore brings attention to found and reworked garments in present-day outfits.
What defines the look
Let the polo carry the strongest color. Its uneven vertical blocks of cream, cyan, navy, magenta and green sit beneath a dark pointed collar, with matching dark sleeve edges. A loose untucked hem preserves the old sportswear shape and leaves the bright panels visible. The small crest is a detail within that larger arrangement. Khaki corduroy makes a quieter lower half. A straight relaxed leg and fine ribs give it texture without adding a second color pattern. Dark suede-and-leather shoes introduce a sturdier finish, with rounded moc toes, visible welt edges and modest tread. The bag adds a different kind of history: old workwear cloth, seams and a label become a slouching shoulder shape. Carry its broad handle beside the trousers so the deep V opening remains visible. Loose dark waves and a lightly finished clean-shaven face suit the easy clothes. When finding a similar outfit, search by garment shape and measurements as well as brand.
