History
CARI credits Evan Collins with naming Whimsigothic, drawing together late-1980s and 1990s design references. NYLON’s 2022 interviews document its fashion revival through velvet, patterned layers and celestial jewelry, with Stevie Nicks and Practical Magic among the influences named by participants.
What defines the look
Let the olive velvet form one long column beneath the shorter paisley layer. The knit’s wide sleeves and open front make the pattern visible without covering the dress completely. Tie its narrow belt loosely at the waist, leaving the skirt free to move. Brown, olive and small beige details keep the palette warm and grounded. The silver crescent sits above the dress neckline, while the dress’s tiny cobra charm remains at its center. Black side-button boots bring a delicate older shape beneath the hem. Long chestnut waves, a loose fringe and muted plum eyes repeat the softness of the fabrics. For another version, combine a full plum skirt with a fitted dark knit and an open patterned cardigan; keep one large surface plain so the layers remain easy to read.
