Cheollik Dress
Also written Cheolik Dress
Cheollik Dress gives contemporary Korean daywear a clear wrap neckline and a full skirt joined at the waist. A shaped bodice controls the upper half while closely gathered or pleated fabric opens below, making movement the main decoration.
This guide covers the modern one-piece dress associated with contemporary hanbok designers, especially Tchai Kim. Its joined construction distinguishes it from a separate jeogori jacket and chima skirt.
History
Designer Youngjin Kim adapted the historical men’s cheollik into a signature ready-to-wear dress. The V&A introduced that work during its 2022–2023 Hallyu exhibition and in an article updated in April 2024; HanbokWave’s 2023 archive also documents a more theatrical variation.
What defines the look
Today’s examples range from plain linen to expressive prints and voluminous sleeves. Treat those choices as contemporary design: the wrapped front and fitted-to-full proportion carry the connection while accessories can remain part of an ordinary wardrobe.
Hair & styling details
A low ponytail or tidy bun leaves the crossed collar visible. A few soft strands can keep the result relaxed rather than ceremonial.
Try softly defined brows, fine eyeliner and a muted rose lip. Let one small earring catch the light instead of placing several ornaments around the neckline.
An illustrated outfit study
One way to put the pieces together
A plain blue linen cheollik dress with low black pumps, small pearl studs and a cream canvas tote. The illustration interprets visible details; it cannot establish hidden construction.

Build your own look
Pieces to start with
- Joined wrap dress
- Look for a real seam joining bodice and skirt, with enough overlap for comfortable movement. Keep the side tie visible and the neckline secure rather than adding a separate belt over it.
- Full pleated skirt
- Small folds at the waist should open freely toward the hem. A plain fabric makes that construction easy to see; check the length with the shoes you intend to wear.
- Low rounded shoes
- A small block heel or smooth flat balances the long skirt without adding much visual weight. Leave the shoe tips visible so the hem reads as a wearable length.
- Restrained accessories
- Pearl studs and an unprinted canvas tote keep a linen version informal. A compact structured bag can dress it up while leaving the collar and tied front unobstructed.

Ways to put it together
Styling suggestions from Coreification.
- Illustrated outfit: blue linen cheollik dress + black low ballet pumps + pearl studs + cream canvas tote, carried by its short handles.
- Printed day dress: small floral cheollik + simple canvas trainers and a compact shoulder bag. Keep the bag strap away from the upper fastening.
- Cool-weather variation: plain cheollik + short open wool cardigan + opaque tights and ankle boots. End the cardigan near the dress waist so the skirt can spread below.
