Gender-fluid fashion

Gender-fluid fashion explores clothes across the categories and expectations commonly assigned to men and women. A wearer might combine, shift or disregard those conventions. There is no required silhouette, body type or level of ornament.

This guide concerns clothing and expression; an outfit does not establish a person’s gender identity or sexuality. It overlaps with androgynous styling, but focuses here on skirt-based dressing and the changing gender associations of particular garments.

The Metropolitan Museum of Art’s 2003–04 exhibition Bravehearts: Men in Skirts examined designers, individuals and subcultures using skirts within menswear. It emphasized that clothing’s gender associations depend on cultural context. Traditional skirted garments should therefore be understood within their own histories, rather than automatically labeled transgressive. The V&A’s 2022 Harris Reed presentation offers a contemporary example of a designer explicitly exploring gender fluidity through performance and expressive dress. Neither source establishes a single founder for this broad approach.

The illustrated outfit brings a men’s Oxford shirt and penny loafers together with a women’s catalog cardigan and pleated skirt. Those retail categories document where the references were found; they do not decide who can wear them. The crisp collar, short knit layer and moving pleats provide the visual contrast. This is an original everyday combination, not a Harris Reed design or an archived exhibition ensemble. Compare garment measurements across departments, especially shoulder width, sleeve length and waistband range. Choose how much contrast feels right, and adapt the clothes to your movement and setting.

Hair & styling details

Hair can be long, short, tied back or loose; let comfort and the neckline guide your choice.

Makeup, nail color and facial hair are personal choices. None is required to make the clothing combination work.

An illustrated outfit study

One way to put the pieces together

A white Oxford shirt and black penny loafers are combined editorially with a faded-blue crewneck cardigan and pleated skirt. The catalog categories cross in this outfit without assigning an identity to the fictional wearer. The illustration interprets visible details; it cannot establish hidden construction.

Pieces to start with

Button-down Oxford shirt
Check shoulder movement and collar comfort. Keep a tuck loose enough to sit without pulling the front buttons.
Short crewneck cardigan
Allow room over the shirt at arms and shoulders. A hem near the high hip keeps the skirt’s shape visible.
Sunburst-pleated skirt
Measure the elastic waist at rest and stretched. Test a full stride and stairs, keeping the hem clear of your feet.
Penny loafers
Use foot measurements across size systems. Check heel security and forefoot width while walking.

Ways to put it together

Styling suggestions from Coreification.

  1. Illustrated outfit: white button-down Oxford + open faded-blue cardigan + black pleated midi skirt + black penny loafers.
  2. For a sharper version: pleated skirt + plain shirt + a tailored waistcoat + low shoes. Check that the waistcoat clears the skirt’s waistband.
  3. For a practical adaptation: wear the skirt with a familiar tee, opaque tights if wanted and comfortable sneakers. Adjust hem length to your commute and daily movement.
