Loose red flannel, a white tee and straight denim
Grungecore
Also written Grunge
Grungecore uses loose layers, familiar workwear and a slightly undone finish. Plaid shirts, plain tees, faded jeans, worn knits and substantial boots supply the main shapes. Here, an open red-and-charcoal shirt frames a long white tee above straight stonewashed denim and black lace-up boots.
Relaxed grunge dressing built around flannel, denim and boots. This four-piece combination emphasizes loose shirt layers and an untidy shoulder-length haircut.
History
Grunge clothing grew around the late-1980s Seattle music scene and reached a wider audience in the early 1990s. FIT identifies loose jeans, oversized flannel shirts, tees and boots among its familiar pieces, and records Marc Jacobs' spring 1993 Perry Ellis collection as a runway interpretation.
What defines the look
Leave the checked shirt open and untucked so its curved hem extends below the tee. The larger upper layer should hang loosely at the shoulders and sleeves. Straight jeans continue the relaxed line without turning the whole outfit into a fitted silhouette. A medium stonewash contrasts with the red checks; intact denim keeps the outfit simple while the soft layers supply the informal finish. Black lace-up boots provide a solid base beneath a small hem break. Shoulder-length tousled hair and softly smudged eyeliner carry the same undone quality around the face. Other combinations can use a roomy cardigan or a faded band tee, with one large texture or print leading the outfit. MoPOP curator Jacob McMurray's 2025 interview places Nirvana within the broader Pacific Northwest underground community, showing the music setting behind this clothing vocabulary.
Hair & styling details
Let shoulder-length black layers fall loosely around the face, with an irregular fringe and lightly tousled ends.
Smudge a small charcoal line close to the lashes and use a muted berry-rose lip. Soft natural cheeks keep the finish relaxed.

Build your own look
Pieces to start with
- Oversized checked shirt
- Wear a large red-and-charcoal check loosely over the tee. Leave the front open and the cuffs relaxed so the shirt reads as an outer layer.
- Plain untucked tee
- An opaque white crewneck gives the check a clear inner edge. Its relaxed hem sits slightly above the longer shirt.
- Straight stonewashed jeans
- Use a regular straight leg with room through the thigh. Let a small break fall over the boot collar; the selected denim stays intact.
- Black lace-up boots
- Rounded black leather boots add weight below the loose clothes. Dark laces and a modest grooved sole keep the shape straightforward.

- Loose plaid shirt + plain dark slip dress over an opaque tee + substantial boots. Use the shirt as the main textured layer.
