Experimental design / Japanese designer lineages
Japanese avant-garde
Japanese avant-garde covers distinct experimental design practices, including work by Yohji Yamamoto and Rei Kawakubo. This guide explores one contemporary direction: space around the body, asymmetric hems and differences between dark fabrics.
The illustration combines Ground Y, S'YTE and Yohji Yamamoto retail pieces. It is a focused interpretation within the Yamamoto family of labels, not a national dress code or a reconstruction of an early collection.
Background
The V&A describes Yamamoto's asymmetrical cuts, unusual silhouettes and challenges to established clothing conventions. His work also gives textile development a central role. Rei Kawakubo offers a different practice: the Metropolitan Museum's Art of the In-Between exhibition examines her sculptural clothing through boundaries between body and dress, and art and fashion. These museum accounts support a plural history of experimentation. They do not make every designer's use of volume, color or gender references interchangeable.
What defines the look
Here a flowing shirt falls over rounded cotton trousers, with a textured stole introducing a quiet check. Black is a choice for this outfit, not a requirement of Japanese design. Look for differences in surface and movement so the layers remain readable. Compared with the broad Avant-Garde guide, the focus is this particular designer lineage and its current garments. The styling invites the wearer to move inside the clothes; comfort and proportion should guide adaptations.
Hair & styling details
Straight or softly waved hair tucked behind the ears keeps the collar and stole clear. Leave enough movement to suit the relaxed clothing.
If wearing makeup, a light base or a single defined feature can accompany the quiet palette. No particular grooming practice is needed to wear these shapes.
An illustrated outfit study
One way to put the pieces together
A flowing asymmetric shirt sits over gathered balloon trousers, with a nubby checked stole and broad leather shoes. Four separately documented pieces create a study in dark surfaces, rounded volume and uneven lengths. The illustration interprets visible details; it cannot establish hidden construction.

The pose changes the flowing cloth and hem angle. The drawing preserves the two-level construction but does not reproduce an exact pattern; the chest pocket is partly hidden by the separately sourced stole.

Build your own look
Pieces to start with
- Asymmetric flowing shirt
- Check the hem from the front and side. A longer panel should move freely without catching on the trousers or hiding every change of proportion.
- Balloon trousers
- Room at the hips and rounded legs create space around the body. Adjust gathered hems above the shoes and leave enough room to bend and sit.
- Textured long stole
- Fold a wide stole lengthwise and let its ends fall at different heights. A subtle check separates it from plain black fabric without dominating the silhouette.
- Substantial round-toe shoes
- A broad toe and treaded sole give the loose layers a clear endpoint. Try them with the gathered trousers to find a comfortable amount of ankle clearance.

Ways to put it together
Styling suggestions from Coreification.
- Asymmetric black shirt + gathered balloon trousers + a charcoal checked stole + substantial lace-up shoes. Let the longer shirt panel and separate trouser legs remain visible.
- Loose long shirt + simple wide trousers + smooth leather shoes. Use a matte and a lightly lustrous fabric to distinguish two similar dark tones.
- Accessible start: combine an oversized secondhand shirt with roomy trousers and existing flat shoes. Try a partial tuck or pin-adjusted hem to explore uneven lengths before purchasing a specialist design.
