History
Web Japan’s retrospective places thick gathered socks and shortened school-uniform skirts in Japan’s 1990s high-school fashion. A 2010 Metropolis book excerpt includes former egg editor Yasumasa Yonehara’s recollections of young women developing their own looks, with lightened hair and frosted makeup alongside uniform pieces.
What defines the look
The difference from a tidy uniform lies in how the pieces are worn together. Leave the collar relaxed, lower the tie knot slightly, and blouse the shirt above the waistband. A checked skirt supplies movement while thick socks create a soft band above polished loafers. Lightened, face-framing hair and visible eye definition carry the gyaru reference beyond the clothes. The sourced Tabio socks are a contemporary revival product and can be gathered to a comfortable lower-calf height.
