Patterned knits · Everyday tailoring

Nerd chic / geek chic

Also written Geek chic

Nerd chic plays with familiar school, office and leisure pieces: patterned knits, collared shirts, easy tailoring and characterful accessories. This interpretation combines a navy-and-grey diamond vest with roomy trousers and low Mary Janes.

A broad fashion label with changing interpretations. This guide focuses on relaxed, slightly offbeat everyday dressing. The related Hot Nerd guide covers a narrower contemporary styling direction. Clothes and eyewear do not establish intelligence, interests or occupation.

Monica Kim’s August 2015 Vogue essay describes Alessandro Michele’s Gucci debut through prominent tortoiseshell glasses and an offbeat, personal approach to dressing. It documents one influential fashion moment, rather than a single origin for nerd chic. Our outfit is a new combination of separately sourced pieces.

Eyewear has practical, social and design histories. The British Optical Association Museum preserves spectacles from the seventeenth century through contemporary designer frames, alongside pictures recording prejudice towards people with visual impairment. Here, the frames are one personal accessory within a fully wearable outfit. Use the patterned vest, shirt collar and easy trouser shape as styling ideas whether or not you wear glasses. A playful outfit need not turn its wearer into a caricature.

Hair & styling details

Tuck longer hair behind an ear to make room around the collar and frames. The illustration uses straight copper-brown hair and a natural finish.

Keep grooming personal. Hair texture, makeup and gender do not define this styling direction.

An illustrated outfit study

One way to put the pieces together

Large navy-and-ivory diamonds bring a patterned focus to grey trousers and a white shirt. Low black Mary Janes and amber-flecked frames finish this original five-piece pairing. The illustration interprets visible details; it cannot establish hidden construction.

Pieces to start with

Argyle knit vest
Choose a vest with room for your shirt sleeves and collar. Check that the ribbed hem sits freely when you sit. One clear diamond pattern gives plain trousers enough interest.
White Oxford shirt
Leave room across the shoulders and upper arms beneath the knit. Position the collar outside the V-neck and smooth the sleeves before adjusting the cuffs. The illustrated shirt has a plain pointed collar.
Pleated wide trousers
Check the front pleats standing and seated; they should have room to open without straining. Set the length with your chosen shoes so the hem clears the floor.
Low Mary Jane shoes
Try the strap at a comfortable setting and walk in both shoes. A rounded moccasin toe and a slim sole keep the wide trouser hem visually light.
Tortoiseshell frames
Choose frames for your own fit and needs. The amber flecks add warmth to this grey-and-navy outfit; glasses are optional in other interpretations.

Ways to put it together

Styling suggestions from Coreification.

  1. Illustrated outfit: navy, ivory and grey argyle vest + white Oxford shirt + grey pleated wide trousers + black Mary Janes + tortoiseshell frames. Keep the collar and cuffs visible.
  2. A more colourful option: a patterned cardigan over a plain tee + corduroy trousers + simple loafers. Repeat one knit colour in the trousers and leave the remaining pieces quiet.
  3. Easy wardrobe adaptation: layer a knit vest or cardigan you already own over a comfortable shirt, add roomy trousers and your usual walking shoes. Eyewear and designer labels are optional.

  1. Monica Kim, Vogue — Revenge of the Nerds

Contemporary 2015 reporting connects Michele’s Gucci debut, prominent glasses and an offbeat personal style. A dated first-person fashion account; it does not establish the label’s first use or a current trend.

  2. British Optical Association Museum — Collections

Historic spectacles, designer eyewear and images recording prejudice towards people with visual impairment. An eyewear collection provides design and social context, rather than a definition of geek chic.
