The Met’s account places eighteenth-century European clothing in a changing world of court influence, international trade and colonial expansion. Shaped bodices, expanded skirts and elaborate textiles varied across the century. Its French silk robe à l’anglaise of about 1780 illustrates a polonaise arrangement: skirt fabric drawn into three raised sections above a petticoat. That specific construction differs from the soft circular skirt in this contemporary outfit.

Selkie’s Valentine’s 2025 collection statement describes Rococo inspiration combined with Victorian details and contemporary shapes.
