Italian concept · Contemporary relaxed tailoring
Sprezzatura
Sprezzatura describes accomplished ease: care has gone into the result, but the effort does not dominate the impression. Applied here to contemporary dressing, it means a comfortable relationship between tailored clothes, movement and a few relaxed details.
Our illustration is a modern tailoring interpretation of an Italian Renaissance idea. The linked products are contemporary references, not clothing from Castiglione's lifetime.
Background
Baldassare Castiglione's The Book of the Courtier appeared in 1528. Its discussion of sprezzatura advises concealing effort so that actions seem natural. The Met's account of Raphael's portrait of Castiglione connects the sitter to this courtly ideal of effortless grace. The original concept concerned cultivated behaviour broadly. A navy blazer and an open shirt are our present-day application of it.
What defines the look
Ease starts with fit. Shoulders need room to move, the shirt should stay comfortable when seated, and trousers should fall cleanly over shoes. A loosened detail works best when the rest of the outfit already feels settled. This guide uses an open collar and an unfastened jacket; adding every possible casual flourish would distract from that simple relationship.
Hair & styling details
Hair can move naturally around the face. Our sketch uses soft neck-length waves and a slight smile.
An easy posture and clothes you can move in make this interpretation convincing.
An illustrated outfit study
One way to put the pieces together
Four separately documented pieces form an easy tailoring exercise: navy and pale blue above generous cream trousers, with a low brown suede shoe. The illustration interprets visible details; it cannot establish hidden construction.

Build your own look
Pieces to start with
- A softly worn blazer
- Check the shoulder line and arm movement before considering sleeve length. Wear the jacket open so that the shirt and trouser rise can be seen together.
- An open-collar shirt
- Try one or two buttons undone, then adjust for comfort and the setting. A soft linen texture makes small creases part of the outfit.
- Generous tailored trousers
- Start with a comfortable high waist and enough thigh room. Set the hem while wearing the intended shoes; excessive pooling can make walking awkward.
- Simple loafers
- Choose a shape that stays secure as you walk. Brown suede keeps the colour transition gentle between cream trousers and the ground.

Ways to put it together
Styling suggestions from Coreification.
- Illustrated outfit: open navy blazer + light-blue linen shirt + cream pleated wide-leg trousers + brown suede penny loafers. The open collar relaxes the clear tailored outline.
- For a warm day: linen shirt + straight cotton trousers + loafers. Roll the sleeves only as far as feels comfortable.
- For a cooler day: textured jacket + fine polo knit + wool trousers + leather shoes. Let the knit collar sit naturally.
