Dandyism
Dandyism makes personal presentation an expressive practice. Tailoring, colour, grooming and the way clothes are worn can all contribute. Our contemporary outfit uses a green suit and a small patterned tie to make ordinary tailored pieces feel individual.
This guide offers a modern outfit interpretation. Dandyism has several cultural histories; these retail references were reviewed in October 2026 and are not period objects.
Background
RISD Museum connects the dandy to clothing, identity and artistic self-presentation, tracing an influential early example in Beau Brummell and later international expressions. The Met's Superfine exhibition follows Black dandyism across three centuries. It locates its development in the encounter between African and European style traditions within the eighteenth-century Atlantic world, shaped by slavery, colonialism and consumption. Its account shows how self-presentation could assert identity and open social and political possibilities. That history is essential to a global account of dandyism.
What defines the look
For this outfit, considered relationships carry the idea: the quiet green suit frames a burgundy tie, and pale blue separates the two rich colours. Dandyism can involve restraint as well as ornament. This drawing presents one contemporary wearer; it does not stand in for the communities discussed in the historical source. Choose the details that express your own taste.
Hair & styling details
Keep hair clear of the collar when judging proportions. Our sketch uses loose, medium-length waves and a confident stance.
Grooming can be simple; clothing fit and your comfort shape the final impression.
An illustrated outfit study
One way to put the pieces together

Build your own look
Pieces to start with
- A suit with character
- Begin with the shoulders and chest. The jacket should close without pulling, and the trousers should allow sitting. A distinctive colour can do more than several added accessories.
- A clear shirt collar
- Check that the collar supports the tie knot comfortably. Pale blue softens this combination; keep enough shirt cuff visible to frame the jacket sleeves.
- A patterned tie
- Choose one small repeating motif. Tie it at a length that reaches the trouser waistband, then check how much pattern remains visible with the jacket closed.
- Low leather or suede shoes
- Brown suede makes our outfit less formal. Check heel hold while walking and brush the nap gently after wear.

Ways to put it together
Styling suggestions from Coreification.
- Illustrated outfit: dark green suit + pale blue linen shirt + burgundy geometric silk tie + brown suede penny loafers. The tie supplies the small, deliberate accent.
- For a bolder evening: deep plum jacket + black trousers + ivory shirt + polished lace-up shoes. Let the jacket carry the colour.
- For everyday use: checked blazer + plain knit + straight trousers + loafers. Repeat one check colour in the knit.
