Trad style
Also written American Trad, American traditional style
Trad is a label for conservative American dressing built around familiar tailoring and useful separates: navy blazers, button-down shirts, straight trousers and leather shoes.
The supplied catalogue uses Trad for American tailored dressing related to Ivy and prep. This guide follows that scope; it does not use “traditional” as a label for national or ceremonial dress.
Background
Trad shares the American clothing tradition explored in the Museum at FIT’s Ivy exhibition. J. Press offers a concrete example: the firm began at Yale in 1902 and describes a wardrobe of blazers, soft-shouldered suits, Oxford shirts and Shetland sweaters. Those garments connect campus and adult tailoring. Their later circulation through Japan also complicates any simple national boundary. A single founding date for Trad as a distinct movement is not established by the sources used here.
What defines the look
The useful difference in this guide is emphasis. Trad foregrounds the jacket’s shape and the relationship between collar, cuff and trouser line. Ivy can use the same pieces more casually. Navy and khaki are one option, not a compulsory uniform. The illustrated young woman wears separately sourced menswear pieces as an editorial adaptation; check actual garment measurements and alterations rather than assuming the sketch guarantees a particular fit.
Hair & styling details
Long, loosely arranged hair in the sketch makes this a contemporary personal interpretation.
Grooming and cosmetics can follow the wearer’s preference.
An illustrated outfit study
One way to put the pieces together
Coreification uses the same shirt, trousers and shoes as the Ivy concept and changes the knit to a navy sack blazer. This makes the shared vocabulary and more tailored emphasis visible. The illustration interprets visible details; it cannot establish hidden construction.

Build your own look
Pieces to start with
- Navy sack blazer
- Look for an easy shoulder and a mostly straight torso. The hem should cover the seat comfortably without overwhelming your frame.
- Oxford shirt
- Try the collar open first. A little cuff beyond the jacket sleeve gives the layering a clear edge.
- Plain-front chinos or wool trousers
- Let the leg hang cleanly from the hip. Check the hem with the shoes you plan to wear.
- Penny loafers or plain leather shoes
- Keep the shoe shape quiet when brass buttons already supply a highlight. Assess heel slip while walking, not only standing.

Ways to put it together
Styling suggestions from Coreification.
- Illustrated outfit: navy brass-button sack blazer + pale blue Oxford shirt + pale straight chinos + wine penny loafers. An open collar keeps the tailoring approachable.
- For a dressier setting: navy blazer + white shirt + gray wool trousers + dark leather shoes. A striped tie is optional if the occasion suits it.
- For everyday wear: cardigan + button-down shirt + chinos + loafers. Preserve the clean trouser line while changing the outer layer.
