Music culture / Coventry and the ska revival

Two-tone / ska style

Two-tone / ska style combines music-led energy with sharp, readable clothing: dark tailoring, pale shirts, low shoes and sometimes graphic checks. The contrast can be spare and still feel lively.

This guide focuses on Britain's late-1970s 2 Tone revival through a current tailored outfit. The music's Jamaican ska and reggae roots remain central to its context.

The Herbert Art Gallery's exhibition locates 2 Tone in Coventry and Jerry Dammers' label, founded in 1979 with an ambition to challenge racial tensions. Its objects include tailoring as well as polo and Harrington styles. The 2-tone.info Selecter archive traces a band formed around local reggae musicians and Pauline Black, with earlier ska and reggae songs among its repertoire.

The Herbert exhibition connects the Coventry label with its response to racial tension, bringing the music's Black and white participants and Jamaican roots into view. Its garments include both sharp tailoring and more casual polo and Harrington styles. This combination follows the tailored route: a white open collar lifts the black suit, and spectator shoes repeat the contrast at the feet. Their exact model is a contemporary styling choice. Set a clean trouser crease and a shallow break above the low shoe so the contrast remains readable during movement.

Hair & styling details

Medium-length dark waves can sweep back from the forehead and fall softly behind the ears. Keep the white collar clear at the neck.

Neat brows and softly defined facial-hair edges suit the sharp suit. Light face shading and a relaxed expression soften the black-and-white contrast.

Pieces to start with

Narrow-lapel tailored jacket
Choose a shoulder that sits cleanly and enough room for an easy arm movement. A three-button front and small pockets provide detail without needing a large graphic print.
Straight matching trousers
A clear center crease gives the dark cloth definition. Adjust the hem to show the low shoe rather than letting fabric bunch over the lacing.
Plain pale button-down
White cotton makes the face and collar line stand out. Leave one button open for this relaxed combination, or fasten it for a more formal variation.
Contrasting low shoes
Black-and-white brogues repeat the shirt-and-suit contrast. Plain black shoes work equally well for a quieter version; polished footwear need not mean uncomfortable footwear.

Ways to put it together

Styling suggestions from Coreification.

  1. Black narrow-lapel jacket + matching straight trousers + open-collar white shirt + black-and-white brogues. Let the footwear carry the strongest graphic contrast.
  2. Dark Harrington + pale knit polo + pressed black trousers + plain low lace-ups. This uses the less formal side of the exhibition's clothing vocabulary.
  3. Accessible start: combine a secondhand black jacket with plain dark trousers and a white shirt you own. Clean black shoes and a carefully adjusted hem make the idea readable without specialist two-tone footwear.
