Mod revival

Mod revival revisits sharp British youth dress through the music and social life of the late 1970s revival. A short jacket, clean collar, narrow trousers and polished shoes create one approachable version of its tidy proportions.

This guide concerns the later revival, not the original late-1950s and 1960s movement. The illustrated clothes are contemporary examples selected for their shapes; they do not reproduce a band member, film costume or complete period outfit.

History

Leicester Museums describes a 1970s return that reworked 1960s style and music, with bands including the Jam, Secret Affair and the Chords. The 1979 film Quadrophenia helped bring Mod imagery to another audience. Levi Strauss & Co.’s archive records its clothing connection to that film, showing how older references also circulated through cinema and brand promotion.

What defines the look

The revival drew on earlier Mod clothing while developing around later music and youth scenes. Here, a short navy Harrington and tipped oxblood polo create a compact upper body above narrow beige chinos. Black loafers finish the clean trouser line. Leave enough of the polo visible to show its tipping, and use the jacket’s tartan lining as a small interior accent rather than adding several competing patterns.

Hair & styling details
