An eclectic Chinese club-and-street mix
Yabi
Also written 亚逼, 亚比
Yabi describes an eclectic Chinese subcultural scene rather than a single coordinated uniform. Club, internet and street references collide through unusual proportions, graphics and mismatched surfaces. This interpretation brings a checked graphic shirt together with pieced trousers, a plain camisole and chunky trainers.
Yabi is an established but contested name with derogatory origins; some people adopt it and others reject it. The 2019–2024 period refers to documented scene activity. A person’s clothes alone do not establish how they identify.
History
Casey Wei’s 2024 Made in China Journal essay traces the term through Chinese club and online culture from 2019. RADII’s January 2023 reporting shows vivid, mixed-reference outfits circulating on Xiaohongshu, including layered tops, dyed hair and dramatically pieced wide trousers.
What defines the look
The useful starting point is combination rather than a checklist of borrowed subcultures. Let contrasting scale do some work: fine checks above larger denim blocks, then a solid underlayer to separate them. This scene has connections to visual kei and internet alternative dressing, but its Chinese music and online context gives the name a particular history. It is also distinct from reducing Shamate to spiky hair and narrow jeans. These international retail pieces are one contemporary assembly; they are not the actual wardrobes of the people in the source photographs, and none is a membership badge.
Hair & styling details
Bleached lengths with visible dark roots and a few thin braids echo the inspected scene photographs. Keep the arrangement loose enough to sit naturally with the open shirt.
Defined liner and a soft pink lip work with the bright graphic. Bolder colour is optional; the scene has no single required face or haircut.
An illustrated outfit study
One way to put the pieces together
An original mixed-reference outfit combining a blue graphic shirt, offset patchwork jeans and chunky trainers. The sources document a broad scene; these individual retail pieces are new editorial selections. The illustration interprets visible details; it cannot establish hidden construction.

Build your own look
Pieces to start with
- Graphic outer shirt
- Wear a boxy checked shirt open enough to reveal the base layer. A large graphic interrupts the small pattern; keep the shoulders comfortable rather than stiff.
- Pieced roomy trousers
- Offset panels and different textures make the leg shape interesting. Check the rise first, then leave enough hem clearance to show the shoe’s structure.
- Plain close-fitting base
- A quiet camisole supplies a pause between the busier layers. Keep the fabric smooth at the waist so patchwork and checks remain easy to read.
- Substantial trainers
- A segmented sole balances the trousers. Pick one accent colour that can stand apart from the clothes without requiring every accessory to match it.

Ways to put it together
Styling suggestions from Coreification.
- Illustrated outfit: open blue checked graphic shirt + white camisole + offset denim-and-corduroy patchwork jeans + green-accent chunky trainers.
- Darker mix: distressed graphic long-sleeve top + wide reconstructed black trousers + silver chain and worn trainers. Keep the hardware away from trailing hems.
- Bright club variation: fitted vivid top + oversized patterned shirt + loose printed trousers and solid platform shoes. Repeat one colour while letting the patterns differ.

Casey Wei’s August 2024 essay locates the term in China’s 2019 club and online scene, describing hybrid styling and disagreement about the label. One interpretive research essay, not a fixed dress code; a satirical vlog discussed there is not treated as a universal outfit.
