Background
Alternative fashion has drawn on several music and street-style traditions. The V&A documents Vivienne Westwood’s part in British punk clothing during the 1970s, followed by her experiments with New Romantic and historical shapes. Today, labels such as KILLSTAR and Disturbia combine dark knits, checks and substantial footwear in their own collections. This outfit brings together four current pieces from separate product records.
What defines the look
Use texture to separate the dark layers. The sweater’s broad fluffy black bands sit beside narrower gray knit stripes, while a plain black tank fills the neckline. Let the relaxed shoulder and long sleeve keep the upper shape soft. A small lift at one side of the hem reveals the skirt’s buckle tab without hiding its waistband under a heavy tuck. The checked midi gives the outfit a long lower line. Burgundy makes the main color, with fine pale and muted-green lines breaking up the dark ground. Soft pleats allow the pattern to open and fold as the skirt moves. Keep the hem around the calf so both boot shafts remain visible. Black smooth leather, dark laces and a narrow yellow welt provide a firm finish beneath the woven skirt. Long black hair with burgundy sections repeats the skirt color near the face; charcoal liner and muted berry lips make the beauty direction equally clear.
