History
Hot Topic opened its first shop in Montclair, California, in 1989, according to i-D's retail history. By the 1990s and early 2000s, band merchandise and labels such as Tripp were closely linked with mall alternative dress. What defines the look
A long black tee leaves the chest graphic clear while covering the trouser waistband. Relaxed legs and chunky rounded shoes give the lower half weight. Zipped pockets and D-rings provide the metal details; the removable rear straps are left off in this combination. Let the hems settle near the shoe tops so the thick ribbed soles remain visible. Purple stripes work as a narrow repeated accent from knuckle to forearm, with a little space beneath the short sleeves. Straight black layers frame the cheekbones, while a long separated fringe sits above charcoal-lined eyes. A blackberry lip reinforces the dark finish. The period imagery draws on several alternative music scenes, including nu metal and industrial. Other outfits can use a striped long sleeve under the band tee or a small colored streak in the hair to repeat an accessory shade.
