Music and image · Graphic contrast

New Wave

New Wave fashion uses a graphic, self-aware approach to music-scene dressing: bold contrasts, deliberate shapes and a touch of theatricality. This version combines black-and-white stripes, red tapered trousers, angular boots and long geometric earrings.

New Wave names a broad musical and visual field, not one universal 1980s uniform. The outfit here chooses its graphic side. It does not stand in for every punk, synth-pop or New Romantic look, and the four products are contemporary.

The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame catalogues Talking Heads’ 1980 concert material within New Wave. Its 1984 exhibition describes musicians including Duran Duran and Eurythmics exploring identity through music videos and style. Nearby fashion experiments were equally varied: the V&A records the DIY beginnings of the British label BodyMap. These sources show overlapping visual experimentation rather than a single founder or prescribed wardrobe.

Narrow stripes and three-part earrings create small graphic rhythms, while the large red trouser shape anchors the outfit. Dark eyeliner and an asymmetric hair sweep sharpen the face. This modern combination draws on the period’s visual experimentation; the selected pieces are separately documented current designs. Keeping the top and boots black and white gives the red trousers and geometric jewelry clear space.

Hair & styling details

A side-swept fringe or angled shoulder-length cut works with the graphic top. Keep one side clear to show the geometric earring.

Try a defined dark lash line and a red or muted berry lip. Repeating one outfit color in the makeup connects the face to the stripes and red trousers.

Pieces to start with

Graphic striped top
A clear stripe repeat gives the eye a rhythm. Keep enough ease to move your shoulders; tuck only as much fabric as the waistband comfortably holds.
Bright tapered trousers
Choose a waist that stays comfortable sitting down. Room at the hips and a narrower ankle create shape without requiring a tight fit.
Angular ankle boots
Check toe room and ankle flexibility. A flared heel changes the outline; use a lower heel if it better suits your balance or walking plans.
Geometric drop earrings
Let one earring sit clear of the hair. Check weight and fastening comfort; small geometric studs can carry the same idea on a quieter day.

Ways to put it together

Styling suggestions from Coreification.

  1. Illustrated outfit: white-and-black striped long sleeve + red elastic-waist tapered trousers + black square-toe boots + geometric monochrome drops. Keep the waistband visible.
  2. A sharper evening version: a plain dark shirt + vivid trousers + an angular jacket + a single geometric accessory. Let one saturated color lead.
  3. Practical adaptation: pair an existing striped top with dark trousers and a bright accessory. Flat square-toe shoes or comfortable low boots preserve a defined outline for more walking.

  1. Rock & Roll Hall of Fame: Talking Heads Poster, 1980

The archive places a Talking Heads concert poster from December 1980 under the subject New wave musicians. This supplies a dated musical context, not a clothing inventory or a single definition of the genre.

  2. Rock & Roll Hall of Fame: 1984

Describes Duran Duran, Eurythmics and Culture Club using music video to explore gender, sexuality and race through music and style. The exhibition spans several genres. It does not make every featured artist New Wave or establish one shared outfit.

  3. V&A: BodyMap, shaping 1980s fashion

The page introduces BodyMap’s DIY origins and founders Stevie Stewart and David Holah in the context of the Club to Catwalk exhibition. The introductory text was read; the embedded film was not viewed. BodyMap is wider fashion context, not asserted to have founded New Wave or designed the illustrated pieces.

  4. Vagabond: Hedda model 5002-001-20

Confirms black leather, squared toe, center seam, side zip and 70mm flared heel for the same model shown in the retailer photograph. Material and construction corroboration only; no claim that the current boot existed during the original music period.
