Phonk — graphic tee, maroon fleece and relaxed denim
Phonk
Also written Phonk-inspired style
Phonk-inspired dressing can bring a dark music graphic into loose everyday streetwear. This interpretation uses a black Metallica tee, an open maroon hoodie, relaxed blue jeans and low canvas shoes: a clear print framed by soft layers, with enough room through the leg to keep the silhouette easy.
A contemporary outfit informed by one documented metal-and-skate crossover within phonk culture. The four current products are independently selected; the tee is not the exact shirt worn in the historical interview.
History
Phonk developed through renewed interest in 1990s Memphis rap, including DJ Spanish Fly, DJ Squeeky and Three 6 Mafia. Splice describes the later use of tape texture, jazz samples and Houston’s slowed, chopped production techniques. SpaceGhostPurrp helped bring the term into early-2010s circulation. The faster, racing-associated drift branch has its own guide here.
What defines the look
In Carrie Battan’s 2012 Pitchfork interview, SpaceGhostPurrp wears a Metallica tee and dark jeans and discusses metal, black nail polish and skating. That specific overlap informs this outfit’s band tee and canvas shoes. Tim Saccenti’s accompanying artist portrait also shows a hooded layer beneath a dark jacket. The maroon color and medium-blue denim are our styling choices. BACKWHEN’s 2022 interview describes making collaborative tapes and exchanging tracks through online networks. These artist accounts place the clothes beside an active music culture rooted in Black American rap. Keep the visible music reference concentrated in one graphic, then frame it with a solid open layer. The relaxed jeans and thin shoe sole give the outfit its casual proportion.
Hair & styling details
Wear long straight hair with a soft side part, tucking one side behind the ear and keeping the center of the tee clear. Smooth the crown lightly while leaving the lengths flexible.
A fine black lash line and softly defined lips suit the dark graphic. Short black nails add the metal crossover described in the interview; they are concealed in this sheet’s pocketed-hand pose.

Build your own look
Pieces to start with
- Music graphic tee
- Choose a crewneck with a chest print that remains legible between the hoodie edges. An untucked hip-length hem works with relaxed jeans; avoid a very long hem that hides the whole upper leg.
- Open zip hoodie
- Let the shoulder sit easily over the tee and leave the zip open. Solid maroon adds color beside a black graphic without introducing another print. A ribbed hem gives the soft layer a clear edge at the hip.
- Relaxed denim
- Keep room through the seat and thigh, then use a slight taper at the ankle. Set the length with your shoes on so the hem makes one or two folds without covering the toe. Plain medium wash separates the jeans from the black tee.
- Low canvas shoes
- A low collar and slim white sidewall keep the bottom of the outfit light. White laces connect to the tee lettering. Check the actual canvas fit around the instep; the illustration records shape rather than skating performance.
