Riot Grrrl joins feminist punk music, handmade media and expressive clothes. Short dresses, cardigans, band tees and heavy boots appear in its visual vocabulary, often with deliberately rough hair or makeup. History
Bikini Kill formed in 1990 in the Olympia and Washington, DC scene. The band describes its early-1990s political lyrics, zines and live shows as part of Riot Grrrl, with touring connecting people who played music, arranged shows and made independent publications.
What defines the look
The contrast between conventionally feminine clothes and punk footwear gives this look its tension. A small floral dress stays light and mobile; the dark open cardigan frames its button front. Fishnets repeat the dress print at a finer scale, while plain heavy boots keep the outline grounded. Choppy hair and charcoal liner carry the deliberately informal finish. Hair & styling details
A chin-length choppy bob with an uneven fringe frames the face without a polished retro set. Separate the ends with a small amount of matte texture product and allow a few loose strands.
Smudge charcoal close to the lash roots, then blot a brick-red lip for a soft edge. Lightly brushed brows and a sheer skin finish keep the face lively; the red repeats the boots and tiny flowers.
